About

The Albany Curling Club offers a Youth Curling Program for children ages 6-18. Our Little Rockers program, aimed toward younger curlers, and our Juniors program both meet on Sundays from 1-3pm. Our curling season runs from October through April.

Our goals in Youth Curling is having fun and developing life-long curlers. To meet both of these goals, we use our weekly sessions to develop each participant's skills. This is done through a mix of teaching skills, drills, and coached games. The exact mix of these activities varies during the season with a movement toward more games as everyone's skills improve.

What to Expect

Each Sunday, our instructors will walk through drills to teach all participants on ice safety, proper use of equipment, curling etiquette, and the fundamentals of the game. We also throw in a snack break during the session to keep everybody warm and to fuel the fun.

As the season progresses, curlers use the skills they've learned to play friendly games against each other, with assistance from our instructors and volunteers. We also begin to introduce curling strategy by playing short games, which everyone seems to enjoy.

By the end of the season, everyone will have an understanding of the rules and etiquette of curling, will have developed some curling skills and techniques to carry with them, and had a wonderful time along the way.

Coaching

Head Coach David Marinucci is the league coordinator and a Certified Curling Instructor. Our other coaches are experienced members of the Club who are certified Curling Instructors of various levels.

Equipment

The only equipment that Junior Curlers need to get started are a pair of sneakers that are worn only inside the curling club (we need to keep dirt off of our ice) and warm clothing. The warm clothing is ideally several layers of clothing so that some of it can be removed as the players warm up during a game. A hat and gloves are also good ideas.

The curling club has step-on sliders for when a player delivers a stone and grippers to go over the curler’s sneakers to avoid slipping on the ice. Club-owned curling brooms are also available for use by new curlers. As youth become more dedicated to the sport, many of them buy their own brooms and curling shoes, but this isn't a requirement.

Competition

Occasionally, we'll schedule competitions (bonspiels) against other clubs. There are a few opportunities to travel for an event, (Albany Curling Club, Ardsley Curling Club, etc.) for those who are interested. These trips are based on participation and interest.
